4 Reasons I’m Quitting Google Drive (And What I’m Using Instead)

For several years, Google Drive was my primary cloud storage. Easy to use, well integrated, and with ample space to hold everything from work documents to personal snapshots, it suited me down to the ground.
But increasingly, I grew uncomfortable about the amount of control I truly had over my own data.
Issues with privacy, secret limitations, and increasing dependence on one firm began to make me reconsider.".
So, after considerable research and experimentation, I decided to move on. In this post, I'll tell you the four big reasons why I'm leaving Google Drive—and what I'm replacing it with.
4. Privacy-Respecting Ecosystem: Proton Drive Aligns with My Digital Values

One of the largest reasons that I switched from Google Drive to Proton Drive is for privacy.
With Google, I always had a nagging worry about how much of my data was being scanned or used to power its ad factory.
That didn't sit well with me—particularly as someone who cherishes digital freedom and privacy.
Proton Drive, however, is constructed with end-to-end encryption in its foundation.
This means even Proton can't see my files. It's wonderful that my personal documents and sensitive material are truly private.
Proton is just one part of a wider privacy-centric ecosystem that comprises Mail, Calendar, and VPN, making it simple to stay safe for all my online activities—without sacrificing features.
3. No More Sync Surprises: Proton Drive’s Predictability Over Google Drive’s Sync Woes

One of the things that used to bother me most about Google Drive was its unreliable syncing.
Some files would fail to upload at times, or changes wouldn't sync between devices instantly.
I used to keep myself stuck in circles of double-checking whether everything synced properly—most prominently while switching between my laptop and phone.
It was a constant source of anxiety. Switching to Proton Drive, I immediately saw how seamless and consistent the sync process is. No guessing. When I upload or modify a file, it's there—just as I left it—on all my devices.
It lacks the bells and whistles of integrations of Google Drive, perhaps, but it excels where it counts most: stability and reliability. I spend less time fixing stuff now and more time actually getting work done.
2. Less Clutter, More Control: Proton Drive’s Simplicity Wins

Google Drive tended to intimidate me. Between shared folders, recommended files, and a busy interface, it was sometimes longer than necessary to locate what I needed.
There was simply too much happening, and I had the feeling that I was completely unable to control what showed up or what was being highlighted.
Proton Drive simply keeps things neat and streamlined. The interface is simple, distraction-free, and intuitive.
I know precisely where my files are located, and I choose what gets shared and with whom—no sneaky links or surprise access.
That ease has been a revolution. It enables me to remain concentrated, organized, and in complete command of my digital environment without all the extraneous distractions.
1. Privacy Matters: Google Drive Tracks, Proton Drive Protects

I have become increasingly conscious, over time, of just how much information the big tech firms harvest—and Google is no different.
With Google Drive, it is not merely a matter of storing files but also of how your usage habits, file contents, and activity could be scrutinized to feed into Google's broader sphere, such as advertising and suggestions.
This did not sit with me, particularly as I began to store more private and sensitive data. Proton Drive does the opposite.
It doesn't record what you upload, open, or share. Everything is encrypted end-to-end, and even Proton can't view your files.
That level of privacy makes me feel secure. I no longer have the feeling that I'm being watched every time I upload a document or photo.
Breaking away from Google
It wasn't easy to break up with Google. I had used their services for years, and everything was highly integrated. But as my doubts about privacy and control over data increased, I knew it was time to switch.
Coming to Proton Drive was a new beginning—one where I had better control, less distraction, and the assurance that my data remains mine.
